Aerosol Fire Suppression – A Sustainable, PFAS-Free Solution for Critical Spaces and Tightening Regulations

In technical environments such as electrical and control rooms, data centers, and enclosed machinery spaces, fire protection systems must not damage equipment, conduct electricity, and must operate quickly in confined areas.

Aerosol suppression systems are a modern, PFAS-free (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) solution that offers excellent extinguishing performance. They are especially well-suited for areas with electrical and electronic equipment. The aerosol creates a fine chemical particle cloud that rapidly and effectively interrupts the combustion chain reaction.

Unlike gas-based systems, aerosol solutions can be retrofitted or integrated into new systems with ease and cost efficiency.

Novec 1230 – Once Popular, Now Phasing Out

In the environments mentioned above, gas-based systems—particularly Novec 1230 (FK-5-1-12)—have long been used. Novec 1230 is a synthetic extinguishing agent developed to suppress fires efficiently without water, foam, or residue. It is electrically non-conductive, safe for equipment, and highly effective in compact spaces. These features have made it a widely used solution in critical ICT settings and vehicle applications.

Why Is Novec Being Reassessed?

Although Novec 1230 has been a reliable and efficient solution for many years, increasing environmental and regulatory concerns are calling its use into question. Novec is a PFAS compound—highly persistent in nature and capable of accumulating in the environment and living organisms.

PFAS substances are under review by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and their use is set to be gradually restricted or banned. Extensive regulations may come into effect as early as 2026–2028. Additionally, 3M—one of the largest manufacturers of Novec—has announced it will cease production and sales of the product by 2025 due to its environmental impact.

Act Now – Avoid Last-Minute Decisions

PFAS-related regulation is progressing quickly, and alternatives like Novec are disappearing from the market. If your current system uses Novec 1230 or you are planning a new fire suppression solution, now is the time to evaluate your options.

Aerosol suppression is the best alternative to Novec—particularly in terms of environmental impact, cost-effectiveness, and retrofit compatibility.

SpiderFire AB specializes in aerosol fire suppression. We offer turnkey solutions covering system design, delivery, installation, and maintenance—quickly, reliably, and with respect for the environment.
